In October the Tarangire is a meeting place — elephants, vehicles and the last water. The operators we prefer leave the first jam, walk a koppie in the afternoon, and treat the baobabs as the destination, not the backdrop.

Tarangire is the park many travelers hurry past on the way to the crater. In the dry months that is a mistake. The river draws elephants, zebra and wildebeest from a much larger ecosystem, and the baobabs give the place a character Serengeti does not have.

Wildlife
Elephant herds can number in the hundreds in dry months, digging in riverbeds. Lion is the regular big cat; leopard and wild dog take more luck. Jackal, bat-eared fox and dwarf mongoose around termite mounds are the small-predator story. Dry-country birds are a reason specialists linger.
Scenery
The Tarangire River is the spine. Acacia, mixed woodland and those baobabs define the north. The south opens into seasonal swamp — greener, quieter, a different safari if your operator has time.
Activities
Dry-season drives work all day; midday is elephant-at-water time. Night drives and walking safaris (with a ranger) are the way to feel the park rather than only photograph it. Ask for a guide who will leave the river jam.
Weather & climate
Short rains November–December, drier January–February, long rains March–May, dry June–October. Early dry-season mornings are cold.
Best time to visit
July–November is the wildlife concentration. If you travel in the green season, choose an operator who knows the south and is honest about distances between animals.
How to get there
Roughly two hours from Arusha — often day one of a northern circuit. Flying is possible but most travelers drive. A night in or beside the park beats a rushed half-day.
Malaria & safety
Elephants close to the track require a calm driver. Walking is ranger-led only. Dust in the dry season is the daily discomfort; a buff and sunglasses help more than another gadget.
