Most northern Tanzania safaris aim here, and for good reason: the Serengeti still holds one of the densest wildlife spectacles on earth. The short-grass plains near Seronera are the busiest. Guides who work the Western Corridor, Lobo and the Mara River treat the park as several destinations in one season.

📅 Best time to go

January–February and June–October (different areas peak at different times)

☀️ High season

July–March (Seronera fills quickly)

🗺 Size

14,763 km² / 5,700 mi²

Altitude

1,140–2,099 m / 3,740–6,886 ft

Pros

  • Wildebeest migration from the southern plains through the west and north
  • Predator viewing remains strong away from the herds
  • Big-sky grassland, koppies and riverine forest in one park
  • Balloon safaris and well-run mid-range and luxury camps

Cons

  • Seronera and the Mara crossings get crowded in peak months
  • Migration timing shifts — lock a flexible operator, not a rigid pin

Beyond the crossing photograph

The image travelers know is a riverbank of wildebeest. The fuller story is a guide who has watched the same pride for years, a cook who knows when the balloon crew will be late, and a driver who turns away from a jam of vehicles to find a cheetah on a termite mound. That is the Serengeti The East Living wants you to book — not another postcard.

Wildlife

Expect the classic East African cast: lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephant, buffalo and vast antelope herds. Black rhino is scarce. The Grumeti and Mara hold hippo and large crocodiles — the river crossings are a feeding event as much as a migration photograph. A guide who knows denning wild dog or koppie leopard will change the day more than another hour on a crowded crossing bank.

Scenery

The south is short-grass plains and granite koppies. The Western Corridor follows the Grumeti and Mbalageti through riverine woodland toward Lake Victoria. North, the Lobo hills and Mara River feel steeper, greener and more intimate. Light changes fast — golden hour here is a reason photographers book extra nights.

Activities

Most days are morning and afternoon drives, or a full day with a picnic. Balloon safaris launch at dawn and end with breakfast in the grass. Night drives and walks are offered from some concession camps, not from every park lodge — ask the operator, not the brochure headline.

Weather & climate

Days are often around 27°C / 81°F. Nights and dawn drives are cold enough for a fleece. Dry season (June–October) is the most reliable for roads and viewing. March–April can close some tracks and change camp availability.

Best time to visit

Visit year-round if you pick the right sector. January–February: calving around Ndutu. June–July: western corridor. August–September: Mara River crossings when the herds have reached the north. Central Serengeti stays productive when you want cats more than crossings.

How to get there

Most travelers overnight in Arusha, then drive via Tarangire or Manyara and the Ngorongoro highlands, or fly into a Serengeti airstrip. Flying saves a long dusty day and positions you for the season. Your operator should say which strip matches the herds — not just the cheapest ticket.

Malaria & safety

Safari vehicles and camps are the controlled environment. Heat, dust and early starts are the real fatigue. Malaria risk exists; follow current medical advice. Stay seated on game drives unless your guide says otherwise — especially near cats and crossings.
