Africa aficionados argue about Ruaha the way others argue about the Serengeti. The park is huge, the camps are spread out, and the bush feel is the point. You come for lion, wild dog, elephant and the sense that the road is still a suggestion.

📅 Best time to go

June to October (best wildlife viewing)

☀️ High season

June to October — and it is still rarely crowded

🗺 Size

20,226 km² / 7,809 mi²

⛰ Altitude

721–1,863 m / 2,365–6,112 ft

Pros

  • ✓Exceptional predator viewing, including large lion prides
  • ✓One of East Africa’s better wild-dog landscapes
  • ✓Kudu, roan and sable add antelope depth
  • ✓Space — vehicles do not stack the way they do in Seronera

Cons

  • ✕Fewer budget camps; this is rarely a cheap add-on
  • ✕Wildlife scatters in the rains; many lodges close March–May

Why repeat visitors leave the north

Ruaha is for travelers who already know the crater photograph and want a guide who still has time to sit with a pride. Compare southern operators on The East Living — they are not invisible fulfilment for a foreign reseller.

Wildlife

Lion prides here can be large. Wild dog are present but wide-ranging — denning season is the honest window. Elephant, giraffe and a wide antelope list including greater kudu. Cheetah uses the more open country. This is not a rhino park.

Scenery

The Great Ruaha and its sand rivers. Miombo, baobab, koppie and open grassland in shifting patches. It feels untidy in the best way — not a single postcard horizon.

Activities

Dawn and late drives for cats; night drives for the other half of the park; walking for the details a vehicle misses. Photographers should budget time, not just kilometers.

Weather & climate

Near-equatorial, cooler and drier May–October (afternoons around 27°C). November–April is hotter and humid; rain is often short and sharp.

Best time to visit

May–October for heat and viewing along the river. Wet-season roads can close; confirm camp status before you plan a tight itinerary.

How to get there

Fly from Dar or Arusha to a Ruaha airstrip, or drive via Iringa as part of a southern circuit with Mikumi or Nyerere. Road days are long — flying is how most travelers protect the safari.

Malaria & safety

Remote means self-reliant camps and satellite comms. Walking is armed-ranger only. Heat is the daily management issue. Medical evacuation insurance is not optional here.
