Formerly Selous, Nyerere is the southern answer to the northern postcard. The Rufiji and its lakes let you boat past hippo and crocodile, walk with a ranger, and drive for lion at first light. It is not as densely stocked as the Serengeti. It is more rounded as a bush experience if you choose the right camp.

Wildlife
Buffalo and elephant herds, Masai giraffe, impala and greater kudu. Wild dog is a headline; sable is a quieter prize. Lion shows best on early drives. Hippo and crocodile density on the water is the memory most people keep.
Scenery
Miombo woodland inland; palm-lined channels, sandbanks and lakes along the Rufiji. Dead trees in water, emerald floodplains — a greener, wetter visual language than the northern plains.
Activities
This is why people choose Nyerere: a boat in the heat of the day, a walk for tracks and birds, a night drive where camps allow, fly-camping if you want the sky. Game drives still matter for cats.
Weather & climate
Hot and humid most of the year; slightly kinder June–October. Equatorial temperatures do not swing like the crater rim.
Best time to visit
June–October. Wet-season travelers should confirm which camps are open and which roads still work.
How to get there
Road from Dar via Mikumi, or a short flight to a park airstrip. From Zanzibar, fly-in luxury programs skip the highway. Your operator should be clear about transfer time — this is not a half-day add-on from Arusha.
Malaria & safety
Boats stay a respectful distance from hippo pods. Walking is ranger-led. Heat and sun on the water are the daily risk. Follow current malaria advice for the low-altitude south.
