Steep forest, boat access from Kigoma, and chimp families that have been followed for generations. This is a trek, not a game drive.

Arusha-raised writer and former camp manager who has worked the northern circuit and the Rufiji. She edits The East Living Tanzania guides with operators who still drive the routes.

Forest, not postcard plains

Gombe is for travelers who want to walk with researchers’ descendants — local trackers — rather than sit in a cruiser.

Wildlife

Chimpanzees plus other forest primates. This is not a plains safari.

Scenery

Lakeshore forest rising hard from Tanganyika.

Activities

Trekking is the day. Swimming off camp beaches is the evening.

Weather & climate

Hot, humid, wetter November–May.

Best time to visit

Drier trails June–October.

How to get there

Fly to Kigoma, then boat. There is no road circuit.

Malaria & safety

Fitness matters. Follow chimp-distance rules. Yellow fever and malaria advice apply.
